Chapter 13

KEEP UP!” SNAPPED Braxis at Therion. In the darkness and hours that lay before them, Braxis was eagerly following the scent. The shadow, a sign of Azelus’s reign, had fully shrouded the Natori village where they now returned. Therion’s troops had demolished all that was left of the small village, and all the vegetation had begun to die, having been choked to death by the poisonous fumes that accompanied the presence of darkness. The once crystal clear water was now a green, slimy toxic waste, unfit for anything other than for what was its purpose—to destroy life. In the air was the unmistakable stench of sulfur, swirling and settling, stagnant in the atmosphere.

“This is where you found them?” Therion enquired, as Braxis approached the barn, blackened nose pressed to the ground.

“Yes. There couldn’t have been more than three or four of them. A girl was with them . . . she had the aroma of the king about her,” he growled. Therion winced. “Almost made me vomit, the smell,” Braxis remarked, screwing up his nose as though he could smell it still. Therion looked around him. He sniffed the air.

“Not here now,” Arche commented as he appeared from inside the barn, having already beat them there. “Nothing but the sweet smell of destruction.”

“No, but they won’t be far,” Braxis responded.

“What are your orders then, my lord?” Therion asked reluctantly. He loathed taking orders from Braxis, yet was smart enough not to rebel against Azelus’s command. Braxis looked to the mountains that led away from the village, and then eyed Therion with his piercing yellow eyes.

“Take your pack and scour the hills behind the village. Leave no square mile untouched,” he ordered. “There is a pathway to the mountains beyond. It is the only way out of the village that wasn’t destroyed during the fire.”

“And I, my lord?” Arche asked. “What are my orders?”

“Return to Belial with your army. Let Azelus know that his triumph is coming swiftly at my hands.”

“As you wish,” Arche replied, whistling loudly to the hills beyond. Seconds later, a large grey horse adorned with spiked black leather armor appeared. Arche mounted and took off.

“And where shall you be heading?” Therion asked, begrudgingly. Braxis gazed into the distance, as if awoken by something.

“West.”
